MoDOT issues Winter Travel Advisory

By Chase Snider

Springfield – A release by the Missouri Department of Transportation cites sleet, heavy snow and wind that expected to begin Thursday evening and continue through Friday, Jan. 29, in the Springfield region and all of southern Missouri as reasons for issuing a travel advisory. According to the release all state roadways are expected to become snow and/or ice covered shortly after the storm begins and will remain covered until the storm lifts and moves out of the area. Blowing snow and extremely cold temperatures will continue to be challenges for MoDOT road crews.
Most state roadways will remain snow-covered during the storm, although crews will work ’round the clock to keep the roads driveable. Roads won’t be completely cleared until after the storm moves through. MoDOT says that crews will focus mainly on major roadways including I-44, U.S. 60, U.S. 65, U.S. 160 and Missouri Route 13. Expect more snow to remain on ramps than on the main highway lanes. MoDOT also stresses that State roads will NOT be completely cleared until after the storm passes through the region. Major roads may be cleared within several hours. It may take several days before the lesser traveled roads are cleared.
