FirstAlert Winter Weather

By Chase Snider

What SPS parents are saying..

“The roads are not good- we can tell that now. And 6 degrees for a low tonight? You should be able to decide there should be NO SCHOOL tonight…”

“Sounds like a waste of your sleep. You should just cancel school!”

“i agree…I would like to know also..so my kids can get plenty of sleep. knowing that have school tomorrow or not”

“This information is helpful; however, for parents who have to have to work no matter what the weather is like, it would be very helpful to know before 4:45 a.m. that day because it is really hard to find a babysitter on that short of a notice.”

UPDATE: With more than 3 inches of snow on the ground in parts of the Springfield metro area many local students are wondering if Springfield Public Schools will be in session Monday. Road crews have been working the majority of the day to clear roads in Springfield as well as MoDOT focusing its efforts on local highways. Areas in southern Springfield were hit harder than the north side. Forecasters say even if the white stuff starts to melt, driving conditions may not improve because the fridge temperatures will cause the liquid to re-freeze on surfaces. Check out the graphic below from the December Prairie News in which Chase Snider covers how SPS calls a day off. PN Media will be one of the first to break the news if SPS does releases classes. It will be posted on the site but for instant alerts sign up for our Twitter updates by clicking here. Also the entire paper in which this graphic appeared can be viewed here.

Springfield- The National Weather Service says up to 3 inches of snow could hit part of the Ozarks overnight as a system blankets the area. Due to the below freezing temperatures that have swept southwest Missouri for the past week, it is expected that the snow will stick immediately, causing a more rapid decrease of driving conditions. The NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory along and west of the I-44 corridor. PN Media will continue to bring you all the latest on the developing weather.

I’ll just say that even though another day off of school would be nice, people are way to harsh about this sometimes.

Dr. Ridder has a large school district and he and Mrs. Peggy Riggs, Duputy Superintendent, have a big decision to make. Yes you want to know if your child can sleep, but these two probably don’t sleep as the process to determine road status starts at an early 1 am and lasts until 4.
If there is school tomorrow, students shouldn’t complain because its too dangerous. They should just leave earlier and be extra careful on the road.
