Young Academic Team Fights Bravely
One would think that a lack of seniors would cripple the varsity team of any sport. However, the Academic Team’s varsity is led by juniors and has done remarkably well this year in spite of it. Mr. Phil Hockensmith, the Academic Team coach, believes that despite having no seniors, the team has a lot of potential. At a recent, important tournament, the JV team (which is all sophomores) placed fourth and the varsity had a spectacular 100 point comeback in one of their matches.
“I was pleased with how the kids performed and they didn’t lose hope,” said Mr. Hockensmith. Sophomore Wing Lam and junior Paul Somers were named All-Tournament for JV and varsity respectively. This means they were among the top six academic athletes at that tournament.
Next up, the Academic Team will be competing at Missouri State in the Fall Academic Tournament. There will be twenty other teams, some from Arkansas and the Kansas City area, as well as local teams. Mr. Hockensmith expects that there will be a lot of very good teams there and looks forward to the challenge. “It’s an all-day slug fest,” he said, smiling. “It’s going to be brutal.”
